Should I run the A/C when nobody is home?

There's no need to blast the AC at full tilt while you're at work. For central units, install a programmable thermostat that lets you set higher temps when you're gone and cooler temps when you're home. Setting a temperature that is a few degrees warmer in an empty house will allow your system to run less, and still be able to recover in the evening before you return. Free money energy savings! We install programmable thermostats with a few different styles to choose from to meet your needs. We can discuss the advantages to a simple programmable "set-back" thermostat, or a "smart" thermostat that can be accessed remotely and can adjust as your day adjusts. Call Air-tech at 847-639-5336.

What kind of thermostat should I use?

There are several styles of thermostats available now for residential or business use. If you are not one to adjust the thermostat, or don't want to use a set-back style, then a regular mechanical thermostat may be just what you need, this is the most economical to install, but may not be the lowest operating cost. A setback thermostat will provide some energy savings by allowing the system to coast during the day, or overnight allowing your system to run less. These are programmed to follow a routine and most can be set differently for work-days and weekends. A "smart" thermostat offers setback function as well as the ability to make adjustments remotely, which is nice if you have a schedule that changes a bit. Some of these can learn your routine, and monitor energy usage. With a variety of styles available, you may want to ask what is right for you. We will ask a few more questions, but we can certainly find the best solution for your lifestyle and comfort.

If your thermostat uses batteries, please remember to put fresh batteries in your setback thermostat when you change your clocks and change batteries in your smoke detectors. Having dead batteries will make your furnace stop working when you least expect it.
